It has been a busy period for Atlas Professionals! In the last month we have exhibited again at two critical industry shows: Ocean Business 2023 and Wind Europe 2023. These events were in consecutive weeks and started with Ocean Business, followed by Wind Europe 2023 a week later. Here is Paul Hampton, Business Development Manager, on what these events mean for us and our industries, what happens at shows, how colleagues meet new faces and reconnect with acquaintances – and what it means to celebrate King’s Day, Atlas Professionals style!
It was good to be back at Ocean Business. This event happens every 2 years, back-to-back with Oceanology, and is an essential event for the specialties, specifically: Survey, ROV and Management & QC. The show is in Southampton and is held at the UK’s National Oceanography Centre, a center of excellence for subsea technology. Atlas Professionals rolled out our already established stand that was first used a couple of years ago to great success and will be used again next year at Oceanology. Judging by feedback, the stand certainly made a presence and was a focal point in the main arena!
The aim of these events is to connect with Clients and showcase our company in terms of what we offer to the industry. Ocean Business also has the extra benefit of having lots of Professionals attending, which allowed us to connect with a good number of them as well.
In addition to meeting old Clients/Professionals and new ones, these shows also allow Atlas Professionals colleagues to experience the industry in a more hands-on way! For instance, some of the Bristol team got on a survey vessel to experience Multi-Beam Echo-Sounding!
Megan Williams, Team Lead, was one such colleague and she had this to say: “It was an amazing opportunity to witness live data coming through, coupled with explanations of how the equipment and systems work. It was a fantastic experience, and it widened our knowledge of the industry!” Below are Megan and Cassie Nichols, from the Bristol office, onboard a survey vessel.
As well as working hard to attract new business and maintain current Client relationships, there was time for fun too: We had a new addition to our stand, the ‘Fishing Game’ which, with a quiz, got delegates involved at our stand to win the prize of a LEGO vessel! As well as the game, we also held a modest drinks reception at the stand, which was a roaring success!
Not only this, the next generation of offshore Professionals (graduates from marine and maritime studies) were present as well, particularly on the final day. To encourage interaction with Atlas Professionals, I gave a presentation at the university on how they can start their offshore careers safely and conveniently with help from us.
The following week witnessed us attending Wind Europe, which is one of the biggest annual Offshore Wind events in the calendar and is held in Copenhagen. It is truly massive! If a company is involved in European offshore wind, they need to make a presence here - and Atlas Professionals had an impressive stand (and we had invited DOB Academy to share our stand with their interactive windfarm game). DOB Academy are based in Delft, the Netherlands and train prospective Professionals in the art of all aspects of the offshore wind industry. Their interactive game was a major attraction to the stand and was really well ran by the DOB Academy team members.
Atlas Professionals had colleagues from UK and Netherlands offices present who not only ran the stand, but also spent time visiting other stands and conducted meetings with Clients.
On Wednesday we had an (early) celebration of the Netherlands King’s Day which involved anything and everything orange! This was an excellent opportunity to connect with delegates from around the world and highlight that although our headquarters are in the Netherlands we are truly global!
Again, on the final day, a large number of students and graduates attended our stand, and we got a chance to share our knowledge of the industry with them.
Networking still remains the key for Business Development in our ever-growing industry, and you know you’ve had a good event when your voice is fading, and your throat is sore from constant chatter. Not only that, but the more we wave the Atlas Professionals flag across the industry, the more we are at the forefront of other company’s consciousness when it comes to recruitment - so we are always looking forward to prominent events like Ocean Business and WindEurope!
From the Business Development perspective these shows are fantastic opportunities to really show what Atlas Professionals has to offer and have face-to-face meetings with multiple Clients/Professionals all in just a few days. However, the hard work really starts when the events are done: following up on all the contacts made to ensure that every opportunity is logged and actioned. These shows are a significant financial investment, and a lot of time is spent on arranging and organizing (great work Aster!) so we must squeeze the most out of them.
See you all next time!
