The Energy, Marine & Renewables industries offer exciting opportunities for those willing to take the first step of their new career – and we are always happy to hear more from our Professionals who transitioned from other paths to the Offshore industry.
To this end, we wanted to share the story of Lucas Dutra, who has transitioned into his Offshore Safety Technician role recently. Below is his story that details how he managed to secure the career change, his thoughts and insight on his new career and Atlas Professionals and finally - what awaits him in the upcoming years!
Moving Forward: Lucas and His Booming Offshore Career
We start our interview by asking Lucas how he commenced his journey and what his feelings were during this process: “My name is Lucas, I'm 28 years old and I am Safety Technician since 2013. I never thought about the offshore area, due to my lack of knowledge at the time, but after my first boarding, everything changed, and I was sure that this was the profession I wanted to and should follow: I don´t regret it by one bit. Even with so many difficulties to get into my area of expertise, which I have knowledge and know how to do, the journey was not easy, but I never got discouraged or stopped specializing.”
“In March 2021, I started my Offshore life as someone who was very far from their area of expertise, but I was right where I wanted to be, where my heart beats strongest. Finally, I was at sea! Then, in January 2022, I received a call from Atlas Professionals to complete an onboarding as a safety technician on a platform, but it was a one-month contract. It was a tough choice indeed, to leave where I was, with a "stable" job or to take a little risk, show my work and go for what I wanted," says Lucas.
For Lucas, the decision to enrol is still a fresh memory: “I spent nights thinking, talking to myself, but there was no way, I felt ready, I knew what I should do, and I did it. I joined Atlas Professionals and completed two tours, and after that the contract time was up, but I didn't let it get me down, I was sure of my choice - and it turned out to be the best decision!” Lucas then reminisces: “A short time later I received another contact, this time for a longer period, it was exactly what I needed.
When asked about how Atlas Professionals assisted him specifically, Lucas gets a chance to detail his process: “Atlas Professionals, besides putting me on my current career path, expanded my mind in many ways. I never stopped taking courses, because I was always looking a little ahead. Today, I have finished my 1st period at Engineering College, and I am also finishing the Technologist in Environmental Management. Could I do it without Atlas Professionals? I believe so, but if it wasn't for this company, I would be stagnant and still thinking small.”
Lucas, very grateful, continues: “I thank every day for having joined this great and serious company. Even with all the limitations of the pandemic, I was able to meet wonderful people and I feel confident and free to ask questions and talk about what comes next. The greatness of this company goes far beyond its revenue or number of employees, for example. What makes Atlas Professionals great, among other qualities, is that they are a group of people who make you feel special and capable of overcoming and surpassing obstacles that I didn't think I was capable of. My change of life in 2022 owes a lot to the expansion of my horizon after joining this team. I am writing this account from a vessel which was secured to me by Atlas Professionals. I hope to remain here for quite some time, where I feel at home. Thank you, Atlas Professionals!”
