Atlas Professionals Business Development Manager in Taiwan talks to potential talent at National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology (NKUST) about working in wind.
In our bid to inspire the future workforce and tackle the human capital challenge in offshore wind - Atlas Professionals is constantly aiming to spread awareness about working in wind. Most recently, our Business Development Manager in Taiwan, John Skiller gave a lecture at Maritime Training Centre (MTC) in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
With Taiwan setting itself up for a goal to have 20% of its energy from renewables by 2025 – it becomes crucial to pique young interest in the wind industry. With this lecture at MTC, which is part of the National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology (NKUST), John discussed training opportunities, and the availability of local professionals to engage with the offshore wind industry.
Professor Wen-Fu Tu, who leads the wind power section at the institute, invited John for the lecture. The institute provides training and certification for GWO, as well as for survey, ROV, DP, etc, with several vessels in his fleet for practical training and research.
He shares, “I introduced the growth plans for offshore wind in and around Taiwan and illustrated the career opportunities by explaining the steps to prepare, build and operate a wind farm and the various job roles engaged with those. I also used a variety of video clips to bring the outside world into the classroom, including the introductory one from Atlas.”
He also offered some practical insights to the students such as the offshore situation with rotations, project-based work, acting in small teams on-site and the international dimension, “I concluded with a snapshot of some of the companies, local and foreign, engaged with wind power in Taiwan (together with a few examples of recent internship opportunities) which students might consider in their future career path. In summary, I think it was a valuable opportunity to inspire the future workforce to become wind industry professionals,” he signs off.
