Aboriginal Deck Cadet Calvin completes his final swing offshore as a cadet on the Skandi Darwin
Calvin Tolentino is now on the home stretch to becoming a qualified Deck Officer, after recently completing a five-week swing on the Skandi Darwin.
The Skandi Darwin built in 2012, is a Dynamic Positioning (DP) class 2 multipurpose vessel equipped with a wide range of features. DOF was awarded a five-year contract to provide inspection, maintenance and repair services to Prelude – Shell’s Floating Liquefied Natural Gas facility located 475km North – North East of Broome.
DP is a valuable qualification to hold as a deck cadet and prior to joining the Skandi Darwin, Calvin completed basic DP training allowing Calvin to log his DP sea time on-board this swing.
The experience
Captain Chris Stirling advised “Calvin has taken on the challenge of quickly learning the important operational duties that the Skandi Darwin undertakes with bridge and deck duties. Calvin has settled in well with the crew and gained valuable experience which will prepare him for becoming a Watchkeeper and DP Officer.
This particular vessel assignment has exposed Calvin to commissioning and subsea operations and has been a great training environment. This has not only benefited Calvin but the bridge team as a whole in supporting new personnel into the industry. These opportunities are vital for the future of the Australian Maritime industry. It has been a pleasure to have Calvin on board and watch his confidence and ability’s grow over the last month; from all of the team on-board the Skandi Darwin we wish him the best luck into the future”.
In response, Calvin has described his experience since joining. “I have been actively involved in many activities on board and learning the role and responsibilities in regard to Life Saving Appliances (LSA) and Fire Fighting Appliances (FFA) equipment. The Skandi Darwin crew have been extremely helpful in giving me an insight to subsea operations and ship handling which have included gaining in depth knowledge about the DP operations. I will take with me some extremely valuable knowledge and experience that will better equip me and provide confidence to know what to expect when I finish my studies” Calvin Tolentino.
In late January 2019 Calvin will temporarily re-locate from Broome to attend South Metropolitan Tafe in Fremantle and complete a Diploma of Maritime Operations (Deck Watchkeeper). He aims to be a fully qualified Watchkeeper by January 2020.
