Siemens has decided to make Urk a base port for the management of the Westermeerwind nearshore wind farm construction.
The company has already installed temporary offices, installed cranes and built a storage area in the harbour, according to the Dutch media.
Urk’s port will be used primarily to transport people and smaller components to the construction site, while larger components will be transported from the Port of Vlissingen, Amsterdam and the working harbour Oude Zeug.
Siemens plans to construct 48 Siemens 3MW turbines in three rows 500 meters and 1100 meters from the dikes of the Noordoostpolder.
The construction of the 144MW wind farm is expected to be completed by the end of this year or in early 2016.
