The ROV industry is one of the most dynamic in the world. As the offshore industry moves towards more diverless intervention, the role of ROVs in construction and maintenance is increasing, along with their traditional use in underwater inspection and observation. The IMCA code of practice for the safe and efficient operation of remotely operated vehicles has been created with this dynamism in mind. The guidance is updated periodically to reflect technological and operational developments and current good practice.

The code is one of the association's key guidance documents. It is supplemented by a variety of publications setting out more in-depth guidance and information on specific aspects of ROV technology and operations.

While local or national regulations naturally take precedence over the code, it continues to provide a source of sensible advice and practical suggestions for topics that are not directly regulated.
