The Onboard supervisor will participate actively in the implementation of an Integrated HSE Risk based management system at the vessel, in order to deliver a safe performance that meets or exceeds the Project safety objectives expectations.
Duties and Responsibilities – Geophysical Survey:
- To Represent client Onboard during the site survey. Leader of QC client Team onboard and responsible of formal communication onboard between Contractor and Company.
- To ensure that Contractor understands and complies all contractual terms previously signed with client.
- Review contract, scopes of work and technical specifications to ensure their correctness in terms of geodetic and survey content.
- Ensure all equipment compliance with contractual terms, manufacturer’s specifications, and the standards of the industry.
- Verify the geodesic control network, the equipment and the methodology of navigation and positioning.
- Verify the recording instruments availability as described by the contractor.
- Navigation and positioning - Verify the equipment and the spare parts. Check for the instrument’s maintenance and calibration historical records. Verify the integrity of the DGPS networks. Verify the integrity of the RDGPS, DGPS, acoustic, gyroscope.
- Analogue Geophysical Systems. Verify calibration and performance of Multibeam Echosounder, sub-bottom profiler, side scan sonar, both at the AUV and hull- mounted or pole mounted systems.
- HR2D acquisition systems. Verify instrument tests and calibration of HR2D systems including air guns, streamers, depth controllers.
- Review periodic instrument tests to ensure that the recording system is functioning to the manufacturer’s specifications. Keep records of all QC data.
- Monitor survey methods to ensure that lines positioning is within required accuracies.
- Supervise the on-board QC data processing to ensure that optimum quality data is being produced in a timely fashion for QC purposes.
- Supervise procedures and technologies used for acquisition of Geophysics Analogue data, including Multi Beam Echosounder, High resolution side scan sonar and High-resolution sub bottom profiler.
- Supervise procedures and technologies used for acquisition of HR2D data.
- Supervise preliminary interpretation of Geophysics Analogue data.
- Supervise preliminary interpretation of HR2D data.
- Supervise products and deliverables for Geophysics analogue data.
- Supervise products and deliverables for HR2D data.
- Participate in periodic HSE meetings with Seismic Contractor’s personnel.
- Maintain detailed records of all production figures from the crew including standby times and agree these daily with contractor’s project manager. Daily production record to be reconciled against Seismic Contractor’s monthly invoices. Support project manager in the certification of the services as per contract requirements.
- Submit daily progress report to Company Project Manager detailing work completed, work in progress and project costs to date. Keep Company advised of any potential cost over-run or delay in project completion.
- Submit a comprehensive and fully documented independent report of Contractor’s performance at completion of the project. The report should mention quality control procedures, techniques used to improve data quality or production rates and problems encountered which prevented any of the survey’s objectives from being realized and should be supported by photographs. Recommendations for future work must be included.
2.1 Monitoring
- Be involved in setting project specific KPI objectives.
- Conduct weekly and random inspections of each work unit using an approved checklist.
- Monitor action and remedial work plans resulting from audits, inspections, hazard reporting, emergency drills and incident investigations.
- Verify the closure of actions items on the crew remedial work plan.
- Complete tests are to be performed before or during the first data acquisition. Any deficiency should take immediate corrective actions.
- Take immediate corrective action in situations where imminent serious or major unsafe acts or conditions exist.
- Follow-up with the HSE supervisor and the Seismic Contractor to investigate incidents and accidents applying its own methodology and submit a notification in the following 24 hours.
- Participate in reporting of unsafe acts and conditions; coordinate the closure of the actions taken.
- Verify the report incident statistics using a Company prescribed method.

Job requirements
Education and Requirements:- Minimum higher education: University degree in Engineering, Geology, Electronics, Geophysics, Marine Science or Marine Technology is required.
- Training in analogue geophysics acquisition systems, processing, and interpretation.
- Training in HR2D seismic acquisition systems, processing, and interpretation.
- Knowledge and understanding of the local and international Regulations and standards on Workplace Safety and Environment (e.g.: SOLAS, MARPOL, IMO, SASISOPA, STPS, OSHA, API, NFPAs, NOMs, EPA, etc)
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools such as Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and Outlook.
- Knowledge of the processing software to be used by the Geophysical contractor: software packages: Starfix VBAProc, Vista or similar software to be able to give feedback and approve onboard processing products from the contractor.
- Excellent written and oral command in English.
- Valid Offshore Survival certification (e.g. BOSIET or equivalent).
- Valid Medical certification.
- Strong understanding of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project).
- Minimum 10-year experience in marine site survey investigations, including the acquisition, quality Control, processing, and interpretation of Analogue Geophysics data and HR2D seismic. At least 5 years assuming the function of onboard lead QC.
- Experience in Geophysics acquisition for marine site surveys should include processing and interpretation of: Multi Beam Echosounder, High resolution side scan sonar, High resolution sub bottom profiler and HR2D seismic.
- HSE background.
- Experience working as client representative in similar projects with positive feedback will be considered in the selection of candidates will be a plus.
- Adaptable to changing conditions, knowledgeable in application of continuous improvement techniques, with the ability to interface effectively with senior executives and corporate staff as well as field staff.
- Proven ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary team environment. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate well with other E&P personnel.
