Tell us about your job at Atlas Professionals?

I work in the Pay Office and our number one priority is to pay people correctly and on time. My job as the Payroll Manager is to make sure the systems and procedures help us achieve that. I help plan and manage how information flows from the Crewing Department through to the Pay Office and Finance Department. I also have to keep up-to-date with Tax and Government legislation, EBAs and new projects, and how they affect wage payments. All processes are documented to ensure auditing and Government requirements are met.

I also help the New Zealand office run their payroll on the same payroll system. New Zealand has some surprisingly complex Tax and Government legislation. Moreover, their Agreements are quite different to our Australian projects. So that has been an interesting learning curve for me.

What’s the best thing about your job?

I like being a Payroll Manager. Working with numbers and procedures suits me. I like the added dimension of helping employees and management, by paying wages correctly and answering queries.

Working in the offshore industry is particularly interesting, as well as working for our company that has changed hats over the years. It seems like there’s always a proposal or project that’s just a little bit different to what we’ve done before.

What do you do to relax?

Making a house a home with my husband of 20 years. We enjoy walking every morning and sharing a meal or cuppa with friends. I also like golf, zumba and water classes. All these activities are to counter my sweet tooth!

Hopefully I’m a lot more relaxed than I used to be. Don’t sweat the small stuff, only worry about the things you can change etc etc. And I strongly recommend holidays. Four-wheel-driving across Australia or cruising the Mediterranean, I’m there. Seriously, how could you be anything but relaxed on these perfect 30 degree sunny days!

If you could live anywhere in the world for a year, where would it be and why?

Italy – I’ve been a few times and love it…

What about the UK – I’ve only seen a bit and would need a whole year to see a lot more…

New Zealand – beautiful and friendly…

I could live and work in Singapore - that would be a great experience…

What about over East – I’m a Perth local and a leisurely meander round the rest of Australia sounds good…

But when it comes down to it, my family is in Perth so Perth is where I want to be.

How long have you worked at Atlas Professionals?

I’ve been the Payroll Manager for nearly 12 years. Prior to that, I worked for the payroll software company and would visit the Total Marine office in Rous Head Road. That was 20 years ago!

I started in 2007, joining Ros Machin in the Pay Office in Tydeman Road. No doubt you’ve spoken to Ros or seen her on email as she clocks up 20 years service this year! We’ve seen a few company changes together, three years ago, moving offices from North Fremantle to West Perth to join Skilled Offshore. Here we met our third Payroll member, Charis Watkins, busily paying the Saipem Castorone crew.

So here we are, the three of us, still happily processing the payroll at Atlas Programmed Marine – Ros, Charis and me.
