On 28 and 29 November 2012 the IMCA annual seminar took place at the Okura Hotel in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Cecilia Vanman, Environmental Consultancy Manager at Atlas Services Group, gave a presentation on the “Impact of marine manmade sounds on marine life and related environmental mitigation trends”.
The impact of manmade sounds
The presentation provided an overview of the latest scientific findings of anthropogenic underwater noise and the general aspects of its impacts on marine life. A summary was given of the latest trends within mitigation measures being incorporated in governmental regulations and the consequential mitigation needs that are likely to become a vital part of environmental impact assessments and hydrographic marine survey planning.

“It was very nice to share my knowledge to more than 120 representatives during the IMCA seminar. The comments where very good and it was interesting to discuss results and consequences of anthropogenic underwater noise with others and meet specialists in the industry”, says Cecilia. Cecilia Vanman has gained a lot of experience in environmental research during her previous jobs around the world in marine research and monitoring projects. Nowadays she provides independent environmental monitoring and impact assessment solutions for the oil, gas & renewable energy fields at Atlas Services Group.
Theme
This year’s theme of the seminar was “Marine and subsea operations: a culture of sustainability”. The seminar represented the interests of all four of IMCA's technical divisions - marine, diving, remote systems & ROV and offshore survey. During several presentations held by experts in the industry, knowledge was shared with all attendees.
