It’s been ten days since Tom Rainey and Lawrence Walters left Manhattan for their 3,800 mile North Atlantic row back to Salcombe. Since leaving the dock, the team has made good progress, but has already overcome a few problems.
Before they arrived in the USA, rower Sam Coombs had to pull out of the record attempt due to a back injury he sustained during training. However, the team’s substitute rower Lawrence Walters stepped in at the last minute to continue the challenge.
Through their training, Ocean Valour has prepared for the unpredictability of the North Atlantic weather, with wind speeds ups to 40kt and huge waves, the team have already encountered some severe weather which has battered their small craft and have struggled to keep within the current of the Gulf Stream. However, the team have powered through and are back on course to hit their deadline.
So far the duo has raised £26,337.76 for The Brain Tumour Charity. The charity was chosen as their help and support was of great comfort to the Rainey family when Tom’s father, Luke, passed away in 2012 from a brain tumour. The event aims to raise funds for the charity’s early detection program to make sure that treatments can start as soon as possible.
