Atlas Professional Yosep Purwanto, Master DPO

Why this position in this Industry?

“This has always been a challenging industry to work in. As a Master I should be able to adapt myself to different situations, at one point I should act like a parent to the crew and then at another I should have a firmness that’s needed from a leader. Currently I’m working on an AHTS DP 2, MV. Jascon 20, in Erha Oilfield, Nigeria’s Offshore. The vessel is chartered by Exxon Mobil for the maintenance of a Single Buoy Mooring (SBM) systems, static towing and tanker lifting jobs. Our daily routine is to check the SBM and export the cargo hose and the hawser lines. I consider the vessel as a second home, if the ship is run well and looked after this will benefit the whole crew and help the project un smoothly.”

What has been your most memorable experience?

“Every project requires finesse and reliability.  My most memorable experience as a Captain was manoeuvring a servicing RIG, Platform and SBM. This has stayed in my memory as we had to be precise with every move otherwise it could have put the vessel, the crew and the platform in danger. This project really improved my knowledge and skill as a Master, these moments always help me for future reference.”

What characteristics do you need for this job?

“A seafarer who wants to get into the Offshore Industry should have sufficient experience and great guts in operating a vessel, whether it’s in DP or manual operation. The knowledge and experience is a must since a Master has the main responsibility for the vessel, crew and the cargo’s safety. To achieve this, seafarers also should be able to communicate in English effectively with different nationalities and be confident and friendly in getting in touch with people.”

There are constant dangers and threats for seafarers especially in Nigeria. What is your opinion on this topic?

“It’s become a common issue among Seafarers that working in Nigerian waters has become  dangerous with hijacking and kidnapping vessel officers. However, in my experience the situation is not as bad as people think. The client manages the crew’s movement very well and I’m satisfied with the regular rotation, I’m assured that we are being well looked after by our company.”

What has your experience been like working with AAPL Indonesia Crew?

“AAPL Indonesia Crew is very good and efficient in responding to crew enquiries and has fantastic experience in recruiting Seafarers. Hopefully AAPL Indonesia Crew will keep up the good work and their high service quality so that they can be a good role model for other agencies.”
