On 19th January 2015,Van Oord’s new DP2 cable layer vessel ‘Nexus’ got its cable carousel fabricated by IHC Engineering Business. The vessel based at the BOW terminal in the Netherlands, also received a 170 mton knuckle boom crane designed by Dutch construction company SMST.
Weighing in at 5,000 tons, the huge cable carousel will enable the offshore crane to lay heavy and long export cables.
According to BOW Terminal, both operations were successfully performed and were tandem lifted onto the ‘Nexus’.
The carousel was lifted with BOW Terminal’s Gottwald MK1500 and Liebherr LR1600/2, while the knuckle boom crane was lifted by the Liebherr LR1600/2 and Liebherr LHM400.
Damen delivered the 126-meter cable layer in December last year, ahead of schedule.
The DP2 cable-laying vessel was successfully launched at Damen Shipyards in Galati, Romania on 30th June 2014. The vessel will be deployed with the purpose of installing electrical cables for offshore wind farms.
According to earlier reports, Van Oord plans to use ‘Nexus’ for the Gemini offshore wind farm project.
