Two Million Cubic Meters of Sand for the Ameland Coast

8 January 2015

The coast of Ameland is to be strengthened in upcoming months with two million cubic meters of sand. Dredgers Rijkswaterstaat will deposit the sand on the seabed about 500 to 1000 meters off the coast.

According to Department of Public Works (DPW), the rising sea levels around Ameland will lose the coast of the North Sea area and that doing nothing to resolve this issue is not an option.

In 2010 and 2011 there was an equivalent amount of sand dumped on the coast of Ameland Central. "The lifespan of sand replenishment on Ameland is about four to five years,” says the DPW, “the coast must now be serviced again."

Visitors and Boaters

This morning the dredgers started work and will last for four months. The dredgers will work 24/7 to complete the job and visitors to the beach will not be affected by the work. However, the DPW cautions that boats must venture away from the dredgers due to health and safety.
