Atlas Professional Joanne Davies
Why this position, and why this industry?
“When I graduated from university it was an appealing option: career potential, good money and time off. The lifestyle suits me – I dont mind working away as the time off more than makes up for being away. The money of course is always good, and I have always had a comfortable life being able to go on holidays and live where I want.”
How would you describe your job?
“I enjoy the technological side of the job as well as the other aspects, such as the interaction with people. There are always new people to meet, and every job is different with a new set of challenges. As I have advanced in my career and taken on the responsibility of being Party Chief, I have enjoyed it more. I recently took on an office role and although I expected I would hate it, I am actually really enjoying it and am getting to see another side to the industry that I really enjoy.”
And the Offshore Survey & Construction industry?
“The industry is moving very fast, keeping up with the technology of the day, advancing and improving all the time. It is also a fickle industry that follows the markets and the oil prices, so it keeps everyone on their toes making sure they are up to date with all the latest software and hardware changes to ensure getting jobs on surveys.”
Thinking of progressing your career?
“At the moment I am happy gaining good experience in the company I am working for. I have personal plans for this year, so my career progression is on hold for the next 12 months; however, in 2015 I might make some changes to my lifestyle that will ensure more focus on my career for a while. Atlas will certainly be a big part of this plan, and I know I can trust them to help out.”
What have the highlights been so far?
“Working in interesting places around the world and getting to experience the culture of different countries as a visitor, not a tourist. Also, working for a variety of companies throughout the industry has given me good insight into the industry. I recently had a very positive experience working for Fugro AS in Norway, which definitely was a highlight despite it being in an office and completely different from my offshore life.”
