As part of the Commercial Team, direct the Company towards delivering to plan in a new market.

Lead and manage the Commercial and Business Development activities in a developing market and play an instrumental role in converting opportunities into secured backlog whilst balancing the demands of the market with the company’s financial aspirations and risk appetite. Travel intensive role requiring candidate to be “on location” in the areas of interest for a considerable amount of the year with the intention of moving to the North East on a permanent basis

Job description

  • Work with the President and other members of the Commercial Team to inform, establish and communicate the Company strategy in a new market
  • Engender a team mentality within the Commercial Team to direct the Company towards planned (or improved) budget
  • Work closely with the Business Development and Commercial Manager to ensure a coordinated approach with healthy information flow and consistent internal/external communication
  • Work closely with the Projects and Operations to ensure a consistent approach to the securing and execution of work
  • Lead the Commercial and Business Development efforts in Renewables focusing on the Operators and Main Contractors
  • Actively convert enquiries into secured backlog within acceptable margins and risk profile
  • Lead and manage the tendering process, providing guidance for execution methodology, market pricing and Client expectations
  • Ensure the Company’s commercial interests are safeguarded during tendering and contract negotiations
  • Maintain contact with the Company’s Client base both during and after operational phases; strive to secure repeat business
  • Work in collaboration with our partners to secure a presence in the areas of interest
  • Develop and maintain an efficient department and coordinate commercial activities with other regions and tendering offices
  • Actively support the Business Development efforts in expanding and maintaining a network of Clients, suppliers and brokers to become more visible in the market and increase access to market information and opportunities
  • Generally adopt a ‘no surprises’ approach to reporting and communication with Senior Managers and be prepared to contribute significantly to strategic discussions in a constructive and proactive manner.
  • Business Development
  • Create and implement growth strategies and business plans for the development of profitable business streams that establish a sustainable presence on behalf of the company in target regions and markets
  • Following on from market entry, the prime accountability and challenge will be to build sustainable long term business relationships, working alongside the Operations team to further develop the management and delivery infrastructure to win additional contracts and achieve the necessary critical mass. 
  • Build and nurture relationships at all levels with clients and actively strengthen networks with potential strategic partners and decision makers especially in new markets and new clients.
  • As a key player on the commercial team, assume responsibility along with colleagues for devising and shaping future strategy and direction and contributing to the ongoing development of the business.
  • Build and maintain excellent relationships internally, working closely with colleagues ensuring current business performance is optimized, standards of customer service enhanced and new opportunities fully exploited.
  • Acquire and continue to develop a comprehensive understanding of our client’s full range of services, products and capabilities, and convey to customers any new developments which promote the company’s brand for quality service and products.
  • Constantly monitor market trading conditions and customer specific strategic and operational factors to ensure that current and reliable market intelligence is procured upon which sound business judgements can be based.
  • Formulate and deliver sales and business development forecasts, goals and objectives, operating to agreed business plans, budgets and targets.
  • Department
    • Establish, maintain and review the Commercial and Business development Departmental Quality Plan
    • Ensure that Commercial internal budgets are set, understood and adhered to
    • Implement the Commercial and Business development Department Procedure, updating and improving as required
  • Communication
    • Clarify goals and expectations with both teams and peers
    • Ensure visibility and accessibility with the team
    • Delegate tasks and responsibilities to direct reports and/or other persons in the organization as may be required to achieve the organizational and commercial goals
  • Performance Management
    • Obtain and maintain capable and competent personnel within the area of responsibility, including professional development of personnel
    • Effectively manage staff in line with the Company’s objectives through relevant procedures
    • In addition to generating proposals, ensure the commercial team demonstrate a sales-orientated approach with a direct sense of responsibility to build the Company’s order book
  • All Company employees whether permanent or temporary personnel, regardless of location, are responsible for complying with the Health, Safety, Environmental, Quality and Security procedures of the Company
  • In all phases of operations, due consideration shall be given to:
    • The safety and occupational health of personnel
    • The environment
    • Company/Client/Third Party assets
  • In accordance with the structure and governance of the Company, the position holder is responsible for informing their Line Manager in the event of identifying any matters of non-conformance which impacts individual, department, or Company performance
  • Ensure that the proposals submitted to the Client demonstrate how we have incorporated our approach to HSE within our overall execution plan
  • Establish business in the region and necessary set-up efforts in conjunction with the company to allow for bidding activities to commence if/where local content and local set up is required.
  • Gain a full understanding of the local intricacies and implications associated with doing business in the region
  • Ensure cooperation between Commercial and Business Development functions to develop prospects into secured Contracts
  • Ensure all relevant stage-gate reviews take place prior to Contract award to ensure that proposed margins are approved, and key project risks are identified/mitigated accordingly
  • Prioritize opportunities and resource allocation
  • Ensure a consistent and high level of quality is demonstrated through the tender documentation submitted to the Client
  • Ensure a consistent and high level of quality is maintained for all internal stage-gate approvals
  • Work towards implementing a user-friendly, accessible and accurate Commercial database to track developing opportunities
  • Engage in continuous and consistent communication between the various regional locations
  • Maintain regular communication and good working relationships with internal support departments
  • When required, lead Client facing negotiations through to Contract award
  • Ensure quality handovers to the project team on successful tenders are undertaken
  • Insist upon a positive transfer of lessons learnt from live projects to the Commercial team
  • Provide guidance, support, development to the commercial team
  • Ensure that the Company’s key selling points permeate both the covering letter and other key tender documentation to ensure the Client receives a clear and consistent message on these points 
  • Clear strategy established and communicated
  • Coherent team-working mentality evident with Team
  • Successful conversion of tenders into live projects to achieve plan
  • Commercial team members progressing and developing in their role
  • Caliber of Commercial and Business Development team improving
  • Positive feedback received from Clients regarding quality and professionalism of tender documentation

  • Evidence of key selling points demonstrated throughout the tender documentation
  • Minimal/no movement from ‘as-bid’ to ‘BAC’ position



Job requirements

  • Relevant degree (Business or Engineering).
  • Evidence of ability to work well within a Team
  • Track record of developing and maintaining Client relationships (10yrs+)
  • Experience and knowledge of working within a tendering function
  • Experience and knowledge of managing a tendering function
  • Proven negotiation skills
  • Solid understanding of the offshore subsea industry (10yrs+)
  • Understanding of commercial and contractual terms and conditions, ideally gained within an offshore subsea contracting environment
